CVS Health today announced the launch of its second generic-drug-specific drug, which is the first of its kind, in its 50-count series.
The launch will be preceded by generic-drug launches in all 50 states, starting in the second quarter of this year and continuing for the remainder of the year.
The second-quarter launch will provide for a monthly subscription of 100,000 tablets of the brand-name Viagra, which will be available for purchase from the Pharmacy Benefit Management Company.
The second quarter of 2015 was a time of unprecedented cost savings, with the average retail cost of branded Viagra being down 2.8% to $1.19 in the quarter.
The price of generic Viagra, available in its active ingredient Sildenafil, is $0.19 per tablet, compared to $0.08 for Viagra-containing products, according to data provided to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

A man who had sex with his wife during the first three weeks after the attack had to take Viagra to avoid a relapse of depression. But his wife was not taking it, the man's doctor said.
In a statement on Wednesday, the New York Attorney General's office said the man was taking Viagra, which was the drug used to treat erectile dysfunction in men and had been used in studies by doctors in China.
The man had sex with his wife for about four months and had depression before the attack.
The woman was not taking Viagra, the statement said, because she was not happy with her husband's sex life.
Viagra is the drug used to treat erectile dysfunction in men, the statement said.
"Viagra has been a lifesaver for some patients who have been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction," the statement said.
Viagra was first approved in 1992 and is now widely used by men.

Viagra was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1998 and was approved in 2002.
Viagra is the drug the New York Attorney General is using to treat the same patients in China who have suffered from depression.
Pfizer Inc., which manufactures Viagra, is the maker of the drug and was not part of the investigation.
A spokesman for Pfizer said no investigation has been launched into the man's health.
The man has been treated with the drug for a number of weeks.
The man's wife, who is not listed as a witness, said they were sexually excited after the attack."I feel like I am going to go out and have sex and I want to be intimate and that's just normal," the wife said. "I'm not going to hurt anybody."
She said she planned to give the husband the Viagra she had been using for more than four months. The husband, who is insured with the pharmacy, has no plans to use the drug again.

Viagra (sildenafil) is used to treat erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get or keep an erection for satisfactory sexual activity in men, also known as impotence. Sildenafil belongs to a class of medications called phosphodiesterase type5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
